The arithmetic nobody explained when you bought the panels

Picture an ordinary Tuesday.

8am.

Everyone leaves. Generation is climbing and the house is drawing almost nothing — a fridge, some standby, maybe a heat pump ticking over.

11am to 3pm.

Peak generation. The house uses a fraction of what the roof produces. Everything else exports. Under the Clean Export Guarantee your supplier pays you for it, at a rate meaningfully below what they charge you to buy it back.

5pm to 9pm.

Everyone’s home. Oven, kettle, showers, TVs, the car on charge. Generation has collapsed or stopped entirely. You’re importing at the most expensive rate of the day.

11pm to 8am.

On a day/night or smart tariff this is the cheapest electricity you will ever buy. Without storage you can only use it in real time, which means dishwashers on timers and not much else.

A battery doesn’t generate anything new. It stops you selling low and buying high, four times a day, every day of the year.

Add a battery to existing solar

Your panels are already earning. A retrofit battery captures the surplus you’re currently exporting and releases it in the evening peak, when your house is actually using power.

In most cases we can do this without touching your existing panels or inverter at all. A separate battery inverter sits alongside what you have, which means no disruption to a working system and no risk to a warranty you still hold. Where your inverter is nearing the end of its life anyway, a hybrid changeover is often the better call — we’ll tell you which, and why, in writing.

Typical residential retrofit: one day on site.

Add more to the battery you have

The most common message we get is some version of “it’s brilliant, but it’s empty by ten o’clock.”

That isn’t a fault. It’s a battery sized for a smaller life than the one you’re now living — specified before the EV, before the heat pump, before two people started working from the spare room. Early Irish installs were also sized cautiously, because nobody yet had the data to justify going bigger.

If your stack has headroom, adding modules is faster, cheaper and less disruptive than starting again. If it doesn’t, a second independent system alongside is usually the answer. We check which before quoting either.

Battery not working properly?

We diagnose and repair all major brands, including systems we didn’t install.

Why people choose us for a battery

We’re independent.

We’re not tied to one manufacturer, so the battery we recommend is the one that suits your inverter, your consumption and your tariff — not the one sitting in a warehouse waiting to be moved. Sometimes our recommendation comes in smaller than what you were quoted elsewhere. Sometimes it’s “not yet.”

We size from data, not rules of thumb.

Where you can supply half-hourly consumption data from ESB Networks, sizing becomes a calculation rather than an estimate. We can see exactly what you draw between sunset and sunrise, on a February weekday and a June Sunday, and specify against that.

We do batteries all day.

Not panels with a battery bolted on as an upsell. Retrofit, expansion and storage upgrades are the whole business, which is why we’ve been inside more platforms than most installers will see in a decade.

The paperwork is done properly.

Every job leaves with a Safe Electric certificate, an as-built schematic, warranty registrations in your name, ESB Networks correspondence where required, and a compliance pack you can hand to an insurer, a solicitor or a buyer without a scramble.

We’re still here in year six.

A battery is a ten-year-plus relationship. Plenty of companies entered Irish solar in a hurry between 2021 and 2024 and didn’t stay. Worth asking anyone quoting you what happens when something goes wrong in 2031.

How big a battery do you actually need?

Sizing isn’t about your roof. It’s about how much electricity you use after the sun goes down, and whether your tariff lets you buy cheap overnight.

An oversized battery never fills — you’ve paid for capacity that sits idle most of the year. An undersized one is flat by nine, leaving you importing through the most expensive part of the evening. The second is far more common in Ireland, which is exactly why so much of our work is expansion rather than new installation.

Answer six questions and see the range that fits your house, along with where it fills from in June and in December.

What’s involved

From enquiry to commissioned, step by step

1
Two photos — inverter and consumer unit — plus a recent bill and your Eircode. That's enough for a straight answer without anyone visiting.
2
We check what's possible against your specific inverter model, and size the battery against your genuine consumption.
3
What we'd fit, why that and not something else, what it costs, what it saves under realistic assumptions, and what it doesn't do. If a battery won't pay back on your current tariff, that's in the document too.
4
Confirms mounting location, cable routes, protection arrangements and ventilation — and catches what photos hide.
5
Most residential retrofits are a single day; expansions are often half of one. You'll have power off for part of it, and we'll tell you which part in advance.
6
Monitoring registered in your name, charge and discharge schedules set to your actual tariff, backup tested where fitted, and a walk-through so you understand what you're looking at in the app.
7
Safe Electric certificate, compliance pack, and ESB Networks notification where the change requires it.

Commercial

Storage that earns off your demand charges, not just your roof

A commercial battery isn’t a bigger domestic one. The value sits somewhere different — in capacity and demand charges, in avoiding a maximum import capacity upgrade, in keeping a critical process alive through an outage, in creating headroom for an EV fleet without triggering network reinforcement.

None of that can be sized from a rule of thumb. We model it from your half-hourly data before quoting a single kilowatt, and if the case doesn’t stand up we’ll say so rather than sell you something.

THE HONEST BITS

Four things to know before you spend anything

There's no SEAI grant for battery storage.

The domestic solar PV grant supports panels. Storage sits outside it. Anyone telling you otherwise is telling you something that isn't true — check the current position yourself at seai.ie.

Payback depends more on your tariff than your roof.

On a flat rate a battery earns purely from self-consumption. On a well-chosen time-of-use tariff it also earns from charging cheap and discharging expensive, and the numbers change materially. We'll model both so you can see what the tariff is worth.

A standard battery does nothing in a power cut.

Grid-tied systems must disconnect during an outage, so they don't energise a network someone may be working on. Backup is a separate design decision requiring an EPS output, the right wiring and an appropriate earthing arrangement. Decide before installation, not after.

Not every battery should be expanded.

If yours is heavily degraded, out of warranty, or from a manufacturer that's left the Irish market, spending on modules for it is money after bad money. We test the existing pack before quoting an expansion, and we'll tell you when the answer is no.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a battery to solar panels that are already installed?

Yes, in nearly all cases, and usually without touching the panels or the existing inverter.

Can I add more capacity to a battery I already have?

Frequently. It depends on stack headroom, module matching and the age of the existing pack. Where it isn't advisable, we'll say so and price the alternative.

Is there a grant for battery storage?

No. The SEAI grant covers solar panels; storage sits outside it. Verify at seai.ie.

How long does installation take?

Most residential retrofits are one day. Expansions are often half a day.
