Get expert answers to the most common questions about adding battery storage to your home.
Frequently asked questions
Can a battery be added to any solar PV system?
A battery can be added to many existing systems, but not through one universal method. The solution may use the existing hybrid inverter, a separate AC-coupled battery or a replacement hybrid inverter. The equipment and electrical installation must be checked first.
Do I need to use the company that installed my solar panels?
No. BatteryInstall.ie can assess systems installed by other companies. Compatibility, system condition and manufacturer support still need to be confirmed.
How do I know if my inverter is battery-ready?
The inverter model number is the best starting point. Send us a clear photograph of the inverter label and we can identify whether it is a standard string inverter, hybrid inverter or another system type.
Will I need a new inverter?
Not always. If the existing inverter is compatible with an approved battery, it may remain in place. An AC-coupled battery may also allow it to remain. We only recommend replacement where there is a technical or practical reason.
Can I add more batteries to my current system?
Possibly. Expansion depends on the battery model, generation, age, firmware, BMS rules, inverter capacity and permitted module combinations. Matching the brand name alone is not enough.
Can new and old battery modules be mixed?
Some manufacturers permit expansion within specific limits; others restrict mixing modules of different ages or generations. The exact product and manufacturer guidance must be checked.
What size battery do I need?
Battery size should be based on surplus solar, evening and overnight usage, tariff, major electrical loads and the battery’s charge/discharge power. A larger battery is not automatically better.
Can a battery charge from the grid at night?
Many battery systems can charge during lower-cost tariff periods. The feature depends on the system controls, tariff and configuration.
Will the battery work during a power cut?
Only if the system is designed and installed with suitable backup functionality. A normal grid-connected solar battery does not automatically keep the property powered during an outage.
Can a battery be installed outside?
Some products are approved for outdoor installation when manufacturer clearances and environmental requirements are met. The exact location must be assessed.
Does adding a battery reduce my export payment?
A battery may reduce the amount exported because more surplus solar is stored for use on site. Whether that is financially beneficial depends on the value of avoided imports, export rates, battery losses and system cost.
Can you use my existing monitoring app?
Where the new equipment is compatible with the existing platform, it may be integrated. Some retrofit routes use a separate app. We explain the monitoring arrangement before installation.
Do you install batteries for businesses and farms?
Yes. We can assess residential, commercial and agricultural systems. Larger or three-phase installations require additional technical and load-profile checks.
What information do you need to provide a quotation?
We normally need equipment photographs, a recent electricity bill, available monitoring data, the proposed battery location and a description of what you want the battery to achieve.
Still not sure what your system can accept?
Send us the inverter and battery details and we will point you towards the correct assessment route.
