Upgrade your existing solar system with smart battery storage
Add a Battery to Your Existing Solar System
You do not need to replace your entire solar installation to add battery storage. In many cases, a battery can be integrated with the system you already own.
The right method depends on the inverter already installed. Some inverters are battery-ready, some can work with a separate AC-coupled battery, and others may be better replaced with a compatible hybrid inverter.
Why Add a Battery?
- Store surplus solar electricity for use later
- Increase the proportion of solar energy used on site
- Reduce electricity bought during higher-priced periods
- Charge from a lower-cost night tariff where suitable
- Support increased electricity demand from an EV or heat pump
- Gain better visibility and control through modern monitoring
- Add backup capability where the selected system and installation support it
Three Main Retrofit Options
01. Connect a Compatible Battery to the Existing Hybrid Inverter
If the installed inverter is already a compatible hybrid model, a matching battery may be added without replacing the inverter. We confirm the exact model, available battery ports, firmware, permitted capacity and manufacturer requirements.
02. Replace a Standard String Inverter with a Battery-Ready Hybrid Inverter
Many older solar systems were installed with a standard string inverter that cannot directly control a battery. Where appropriate, we can replace it with a battery-ready hybrid inverter and integrate a compatible battery.
The existing panel strings, voltages, cable routes, protection, metering and grid requirements must be checked before an inverter replacement is proposed.
03. Install an AC-Coupled Battery
An AC-coupled battery can operate alongside many existing solar inverters. This can avoid replacing a serviceable solar inverter and can be particularly useful where the existing PV system and battery are best kept as separate systems.
AC coupling involves additional power conversion, so the best option depends on the equipment, usage and installation rather than one method always being superior.
How We Size the Battery
A larger battery is not automatically a better investment. We look at how much solar electricity is exported, when electricity is used, how quickly the battery is likely to charge and discharge, and whether off-peak charging is part of the plan.
- Annual electricity consumption
- Daytime, evening and overnight usage
- Solar array size and expected generation
- Typical surplus and export
- Electricity tariff and charging windows
- EV, heat-pump or other major loads
- Required usable capacity and charge/discharge power
- Whether backup power is required
