Add battery storage to your existing solar system with an AC-coupled solution.
Add Battery Storage Without Replacing Every Solar Inverter
An AC-coupled battery has its own battery inverter and can operate alongside an existing solar PV system. This can make it a practical retrofit option where the solar inverter is working well but cannot accept a battery directly.
When AC Coupling May Be Suitable
- The existing solar inverter is not battery-ready
- The customer wants to retain a serviceable solar inverter
- The property uses microinverters
- The preferred battery is designed as an AC-coupled system
- A separate battery platform offers the required monitoring or backup features
- Replacing the existing solar inverter would add unnecessary work
What Must Be Considered
- Electrical capacity and protection
- How the battery measures import, export and solar surplus
- Placement of meters and CT clamps
- Coordination with existing solar controls
- Charge and discharge power
- Round-trip conversion losses
- Export limitation where applicable
- Backup capability and essential-load design
- Monitoring through one app or separate platforms
AC-Coupled or Hybrid?
Neither route is automatically best. A hybrid system can provide tightly integrated solar and battery control, while AC coupling can preserve an existing inverter and offer greater independence from the original solar equipment. The correct choice depends on the installation.
Compare the practical options
We will assess both the existing-inverter route and the replacement route where appropriate.
