Is Your Battery
Past Its Best?
Replace an old, faulty or undersized battery. Upgrade to more storage, better performance and modern features — designed around how you use electricity today.
Solar Battery Replacement and Upgrade
If your existing solar battery is no longer performing as expected, replacing it isn’t necessarily as simple as swapping one battery for another.
Battery technology has moved quickly.
A replacement provides an opportunity to assess whether your existing battery capacity, inverter and overall system are still appropriate for how you use electricity today.
BatteryInstallation.ie specialises in assessing existing solar installations and determining whether the best solution is to repair, replace, expand or redesign the battery system.
Is It Time to Replace Your Battery?
- Reduced usable battery capacity
- Battery discharging unusually quickly
- Battery repeatedly disconnecting
- Battery not charging from solar
- Battery communication errors
- Replacement modules unavailable
- Battery no longer reaching full charge
- Frequent battery alarms or error codes
- Battery remaining at 0%
- Battery not grid charging
- Battery or model discontinued
- Manufacturer support no longer available
A change in performance doesn’t automatically mean the battery itself has failed.
The issue could potentially involve the inverter, BMS, communications, firmware, meter or system settings.
That’s why diagnosis comes before replacement.
Your battery may not store what it once did.
Lithium battery systems are designed for repeated charging and discharging, but available capacity can reduce over the life of the battery.
The rate depends on factors including battery chemistry, operating temperature, depth of discharge, charge/discharge cycles and how the battery has been operated.
If your battery isn’t delivering the storage it once did, we can assess whether replacement or expansion makes economic sense.
Don’t Automatically Replace 5 kWh With 5 kWh
Your home may have changed significantly since the original battery was installed.
You may now have an EV, heat pump, more people at home, higher electricity consumption, a smart tariff, cheap overnight charging, more solar panels or higher evening demand.
A 5 kWh battery that was appropriate several years ago may no longer be the right solution. This is an opportunity to resize the battery around your current energy profile.
Compatibility comes first.
Usually, batteries can’t simply be mixed and matched.
Battery compatibility depends on the inverter, battery management system, communication protocol, voltage architecture and manufacturer approvals.
For example, an existing hybrid inverter may only support specific battery models or battery voltage ranges.
If your existing battery is obsolete or incompatible with current products, there may be three options:
Sometimes it makes sense.
If the inverter is relatively new and supports a suitable replacement battery, retaining it may make sense.
- The inverter is approaching the end of its useful service life
- It doesn't support modern battery options
- You want substantially more battery capacity
- You want better backup capability
- You want additional solar panels
- The existing system architecture limits charging/discharging power
We’ll assess the battery and inverter together.
A good time to add resilience.
A battery replacement is also a good time to consider whether you want the system to provide power during an electricity outage.
Not every battery installation provides backup automatically.
Systems such as Tesla Powerwall and other compatible battery/inverter platforms can provide backup functionality when installed with the appropriate equipment and configuration.
Tesla, for example, offers Powerwall 3 in both backup and non-backup configurations in Ireland, with the non-backup system capable of being upgraded to backup later.

Solar Battery Replacement FAQs
How long does a solar battery last?
There isn't one universal lifespan. Battery life depends on chemistry, cycling, temperature, operating conditions and manufacturer design. Warranty periods and warranted throughput/capacity should also be considered.
Can you replace just the battery and keep my solar panels?
Yes. Your solar panels don't normally need to be replaced simply because the battery requires replacement.
Can I keep my existing inverter?
Potentially. We need the exact inverter model and existing battery details to determine compatibility.
Can I replace a 5 kWh battery with a 10 kWh battery?
Potentially, but the inverter and battery architecture must support the proposed capacity. We'll also assess whether 10 kWh is appropriate for your actual electricity usage.
Can you replace a battery installed by another solar company?
Yes, subject to an assessment of the existing system and compatibility.
My installer has gone out of business. What can I do?
Send us photographs and model details of the inverter and battery. We can identify the system and assess the available repair, replacement or upgrade options.
Should I install a bigger battery when replacing my old one?
Not automatically. Battery size should be based on your solar generation, household demand, tariff and charging strategy.
Can a new battery charge from cheap night-rate electricity?
Many modern battery systems support scheduled grid charging, subject to the equipment, configuration and electricity tariff.
Can I change battery brands?
Possibly, but changing battery brand may require changing the inverter or installing a separate AC-coupled battery solution.
Is battery replacement covered by my existing warranty?
That depends on the manufacturer, installation date, warranty conditions and cause of failure.
